Your questions answered…
-When can I see you after having my baby?
Ideally any time after your postnatal check with your GP. This is generally around the 6-8 week point. It’s important healing is well under way and you’re comfortable to getting out of the house. There is no time limit as such on how long after you’ve had a baby that you can have a Mummy MOT. I see ladies in clinic years after they’ve had their baby.
-Can I bring my baby with me?
Absolutely! We love seeing you with your baby in clinic, they are always welcome to attend with you and be present throughout the assessment. Some mums prefer to have baby with a friend or family member waiting in reception so they are on hand but at the same time mum can focus on her needs for the assessment. Other mums love having the opportunity to head into town and have a solo coffee and a bit of time to themselves opting to leave babe at home. As always it’s entirely your choice but please never worry about having to bring your baby into clinic (I won’t lie seeing your babies is one of my favourite bits of the day!)
Can I still have an internal pelvic assessment if I’m on my period?
Yes being on your period is not an issue for me completing an internal and I have completed plenty of assessments with people on their periods. This is however a very personal choice as often during menstruation we can feel uncomfortable and an internal pelvic examination is the last thing we feel like doing. If this is the case and your appointment is booked at a time that’s not convenient please contact The Barefoot reception on 0333 577 9121 and we can rearrange your appointment.
What should I wear to the assessment?
Clothing you’re comfortable and can move freely in. Especially if you’re in the early weeks post baby, being comfortable is important. So nothing that’s too tight or restrictive as during the assessment you’ll be squatting and lunging. Whilst we’re on this subject please do not worry about having a wax, shaving or any form of personal grooming. The amount of women who apologies to me for not having had a wax IS ASTOUNDING! Please just come as you are however that may be, with piercings, purple pubic hair or no pubic hair, I don’t care I just want you to be comfortable and to know that’s all that matters!
Do you just see women who have had babies?
No- I see women of all ages who are presenting with all kinds of pelvic symptoms. Painful sex, urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, birth prep, pelvic floor education, perimenopause and menopause symptoms, and prolapse. When I use the word women I am not actively trying to exclude anybody. I am referring to cis women with natal female anatomy. This is due entirely to the training I have received with this population group.
